This time we present a conventional generator for automotive engine applications – the 28V 35A Integral Alternator. An alternator consists of two main parts: the stator winding and the rotor winding (field winding). The three-phase stator windings are distributed within the housing at 120 electrical degrees apart from each other. The rotor winding is formed between two pole claws.When DC current is supplied to the rotor winding, it becomes energized, turning the two pole claws into a North (N) and a South (S) pole. The magnetic flux lines originate from the N pole, pass through the air gap into the stator core, and return to the adjacent S pole. Once the rotor rotates, the magnetic flux lines are cut by the rotor winding, inducing a sinusoidal electromotive force in the stator windings. This results in a three-phase alternating current (AC), which is then converted into direct current (DC) output by a rectifier composed of diodes.
